Hello sports fans. My name is Holly and I will be covering both the Saint Louis University Billikens as well as the Indiana Hoosiers. I am originally from a small town in Southern IL but I have been a fan of Indiana basketball for as long as I can remember. Both of my parents were huge fans and I remember growing up, crowding around the TV with all their friends when I was 5-6 to watch the Nationally televised games. I never asked how they came to love the Hoosiers, but it was as natural to me as being a St. Louis Cardinals fan (which if you don’t know, comes pretty natural in the STL area).
Coincidentally I ended up attending Graduate school at Indiana University (my younger sister joined me as an undergraduate a year later) and had the privilege and pleasure to attend every home basketball game the two years I was there.
So how did I come to love the Billikens as well? While I am and always will be a life-long Hoosier, I am first and fore-most a fan of college basketball. This year alone, my friend and I have attended all but 2 Billiken home games; IL St vs. Creighton in Bloomington, IL; Indiana vs. Michigan St in Bloomington, IN; Indiana vs. IL in Champaign, IL; and every game of the MVC Tournament in St. Louis. Yes, that’s a lot of basketball but when people tell me I’m crazy I simply ask: ‘Have you ever loved anything since you were 4 years old?’
I moved to St. Louis about 6 years ago and quickly adopted the Billikens as my hometown team around the time Rick Majerus took over. It’s hard not to fall in love with a Rick Majerus coached team. They play hard, with passion, and unbelievable poise. It’s been fun and, at times, I have felt overwhelming proud of what this team has accomplished under the circumstances.
That’s a bit of an introduction of me. I’ll be posting separately about the teams from now on. I’ll be answering your burning questions like “What the heck is a Billiken…or a Hoosier for that matter, anyway?”
